An Arkansas Hero

Camp Bowen, Miss., 13th August 1863.

Col. B. S. Ewell, A.A.G.

Colonel—I, Thomas N. C. Bird, a private in Capt. McCarley's Co. G of the 21st Regt of Ark. Volunteers, was wounded at the Battle of Corinth, Miss. (severely) on the 4th of Oct. 1862. Was taken prisoner & afterwards exchanged & furloughed home. I got able to return to join my command 15th June 63. Reached Jackson 4th July 63. Was unable to rejoin my command which was at Vicksburg. Have been with Capt. Gray's Co. C, 2d Ark. Dmtd. Rifles, since the 8th inst. My command is now paroled & west of the Miss. River. I respectfully ask that I be transferred to Capt. Gray's Co. C, 2d Ark. Dmtd. Rifles, as it is from my county and I have many friends & acquaintances in said company.

NOTE: Private Bird's transfer was approved. Four weeks later, he was killed in action at Chickamauga, September 19, 1863. He was posthumously named to the Confederate Roll of Honor on August 10, 1864, for his heroism in the Battle of Chickamauga.
