In an excerpt from "Uniforms of the Civil War: An Illustrated Guide for Historians, Collectors, and Re-enactors" by Robin Smith and Ron Field about Uniforms of Arkansas reads as follows, "The Arkansas Military Institute had existed at Tulip, in Dallas County, since 1850. Modelled on the Virginia Military Institute, it apparently adopted the gray dress and fatigue uniforms of that revered establishment. It's doors were closed in 1861 as the cadets under Captain James B. Williamson formed Co. I 4th Arkansas Infantry." Now if the cadets actually did form Co. I of the 4th, I cannot say for sure, but I do know that the 4th Ark. Inf. was at Perryville, KY. According to Captain John w. Lavendar of Co. F, 4th Ark. Inf, "The day the Battle was Fought at Perryville we was in hearing and near by but was sent around in the Rear of the Enemy and captured a large wagon train..." That could expalin the AMI Button found at Perryville.
