Les,

Arkansas abounds with lots of heroic individuals from the war. The Edward Gerdes Civil War Page, and the County and Historical Society records/websites have lots of family information. For Instance 1st Lieutenant John Campbell Bilbrey (45th Arkansas Calvalry) also served in the 38th Arkansas Infantry as a Sgt., and in a 30-Day Volunteer unit. Extensive Family research has been completed and posted about him. He was a farmer, A tanner, and a founding father of a Primitive Baptist Church and active community man after the war. His decendants still own and reside on the Bilbrey farm. The family oral history of his reuniting with his family after Price's Raid is recorded and published, and I think is posted on the net. Hopefully reading about Lt. Bilbrey can generate some leads and assist you in the development of your book. The Lawrence County History compiled by the Lawrence County Arkansas Historical Society has many family biographies. One gentleman, a Sgt Beavers from the 5th Illonois Calvary (US), who fought a skirmish in the Sharp/Lawrence County area married a local woman and is buried in Lawrence County Arkansas. His story is a really neat story.
