MONUMENT AND MARKERS DEDICATION, WARTRACE, TENNESSEE

Major/General Benjamin F. Cheatham SCV Camp 72, Kirby-Smith Chapter 327 UDC, Beech Grove Confederate Memorial Association, Sumner A Cunningham SCV Camp 1620 and Town of Wartrace, Tennessee invites everyone to the dedication of a monument to Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne’s Division, brilliant defenders of Liberty Gap, June 24-26 1863 and dedication of VA markers for his soldiers that died during battle and their stay at Wartrace, Bedford County, Tennessee. After some one hundred forty-eight years plus has passed without recognition of their heroic stand against overwhelming 4 to 1 odds at Liberty Gap, and the graves of his brave Arkansas soldiers that have lain in unmarked graves will change on December 10, 2011 at 10 A.M. when a monument unveiling ceremony and a memorial service and marker dedication for the Arkansas Soldiers buried in Willow Mount Cemetery, Confederate Section. There will be speakers, Confederate re-enactors, Infantry, Artillery, Bagpiper, Southern Ladies of Kirby-Smith 327 UDC in period dresses. After the dedications the ladies of Kirby-Smith invites everyone to partake of the fine refreshments and finger food served by them in their period clothing.

Gen. Cleburne’s Division Headquarters was at Beechwood near Wartrace with Corps Commander Gen. Wm. J. Hardee but his daily operations headquarters was from a room in Chockley Tavern just across Spring Street from the new monument being dedicated? Time and place will be 10 A.M. on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the Town of Wartrace Memorial Park on Spring Street one block North of Walking Horse Hotel on the very grounds Gen. Cleburne’s Staff Officers Camped from Jan. 9, 1863 until the early morning of 27 June, 1863 when they retreated by orders of Gen. Bragg to Tullahoma.
After some one hundred forty-eight years plus have passed without recognition of their heroic stand, the graves of brave Arkansas soldiers that have lain in unmarked graves will be marked. This will consist of the unveiling ceremony and a memorial service and marker dedication for the Arkansas Soldiers buried in Willow Mount Cemetery, Confederate Section.
