Ark. 3rd regiment, Co. E, infantry CSA

My great, great grandfather, Samuel P. Stanphill, served with the Arkansas 3rd Regiment, Compnay E, Infantry CSA and I was wondering if anyone out there knows anything about him or this unit. I would really appreciate if anyone has information that places him with the regiment, it's battles, etc. I have a picture of him and on his jacket, he wears corporal stripes. His jacket is dark and at first, I thought he was on the Union side but understand that soliders often took coats from dead soliders and it did not matter want side they were on and in the beginning, there was a lot of friendly fire because both sides worn navy blue jackets. However, I have found documents that say he was CSA but family history has come down that there were three Stanphill brothers, two fought for the South and one went to the Union. I could not find out who went where and of course, their names. I have also found out that in my family, the last name changed it's spelling from Stanfield to Stanphill because one side of the family did not want to be associated with the other. I also read where one male family member was involved with a killing, over a female cousin, which might have been the reason for changing the spelling. All heresay, at this point. My family is originally from the Berryville/Greenville/Fayetteville area but they moved to Texas after the Civil War and also from Illinois and Missouri area.
Thanks
