Special Orders No 16, June 26, 1862, Army of the South West,
Par III. Capt T. M. Whittington is authorized to raise one or more companies of infantry for the war in Desha, Chicot, Drew, Bradkey and Ashley counties, to be reported to Gen Roane upon the formation of these companies, with others, into a regiment. Capt Whittington will be assigned to duty with at least the rank of Lt Col. Capt Whittington will have command in the counties named until Gen Roane orders otherwise, and will make all necessary steps for resisting invasion or marauding by the enemy, obstructin roads, destroying bridges, etc, etc. Capt Whittington is authorized to arm and equip and subsist his command until Gen Roane shall have provided therefor, by purchase, or if necessary by impressment, giving duplicate receipts in proper form for all articles purchased, allowing reasonable prices...
Par IV. Capt Edwards company of Bradley County will report to Capt Whittington forthwith.
Par V Capt O'Neill's mounted company of Drew County will report to Capt Whittington for orders.
Par VI Capt Trotter's company of Drew County, will report to Capt Whittington for orders.
I believe that Whittington Battalion became a part of Portlock's 24th Arkansas Infantry. Capt. O'Neill's mounted Company was assigned to Fagan's/Monroe's Arkansas Cavalry Regiment in order dated August 2, 1862
