Can't really find anything on McMurtrey's BN as to numerical... he was CPT of Co D 2nd ARk Cav east of the Miss R at least until Aug 1863. His CSR does not show anything on his bn. He does have a card showing his promotion to Lt Col of the 2nd. However....in the card of Coleman Whitley, an officer of Co B 2nd Ark Cav is the information that they were calling themselves the 2nd Ark Cav still. WHitley sends in his resignation in June of 1864 and refers to the unit as 2nd Ark Cav and the commander as LTC Elisha L. McMurtrey. Not sure of the connection with Slemmons when he comes over west of the river and establishes the 2nd Ark Cav that he commanded.
