Where was Camp Cedar, Arkansas - 1862

HL:

Thanks for your response!

I examined the Compiled Military Service Records for Sidney Russell. The first company muster roll for Company C, Hunter's Battalion, Missouri Infantry covers enrollment in August 1862 to 31 OCT 62 and shows that Sidney was enlisted on 19 JUL 1862 at Camp Cedar by Thomas Wright for 3 years. The next muster covering 27 AUG to 31 DEC 1862 shows enrollment on 25 JUL 1862 at Camp Cedar by J. S. Herriford for 3 years. The company muster roll for Company C, 8th Missouri Infantry covering 30 APR 63 to 31 AUG 63 reverts to 19 JUL 62 at Camp Cedar for date and place of enrollment. This muster roll reports that he was taken prisoner at Helena, Arkansas on 4 JUL 1863. The last muster roll was for Company C, 11th Missouri Infantry covering January & February 1864 which shows his enlistment as 1 AUG (1862) in Barry County, Missouri by J. S. Herriford for 3 years. My understanding has been that enrollment was normally a two step process. Men were first enrolled for state service near their homes and then taken to a camp of organization and intruction where they were transferred or accepted into Confederate service. All of these dates and different enrolling officers would seem to confirm that process.

I found a nice biography for Sidney RUSSELL posted on line at rootsweb.ancetry.com entitled "The Russell Family of Eagle Rock, Barry County, Missouri". The author writes that he "joined in October of 1862 in Camp Cedar, Arkansas by T. Wright for 3 years." This biography confirms that Barry County, Missouri was his place of residence.

So the question remains: where was Camp Cedar, Arkansas located?

Hugh
