The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Damon,
The only easily accessible version of The Alexander Papers that I know of has been made available online by Terry Justice. I believe you have been referred to that source, and is perhaps that which you are using.

I have not made a comparison between Terry’s work and the several microfilm reels that I have personally studied. Another frequent contributor to this board kindly loaned me his personal set of microfilm, and in order not to infringe upon his generosity, I hurriedly made some handwritten notes, some electronic scanned copies and many, many hard copies. Yes, I know, not very sophisticated.

After I had returned the borrowed film, I then began the slow process of compiling the raw information into some sort of semi organized scheme. Typically, I organized the material by various command organizations and then chronologically within each of those categories.

These "personal notes" that I made from The Alexander Papers are by no means a word for word, formatted reproduction of each order and message. That was not my purpose.

I did this for my own personal research purposes and have since then made my own computerized compilations. These are not fully formatted word for word transcriptions, but rather compiled merely to serve my own personal research purposes, and hopefully to be of some minimal and occasional use to other researchers.

Generally however, I can dig through my filing cabinets out in the garage and eventually find the hard copy of the complete actual message or order, etc.

That is what I just did in order to try and answer your questions as follows:

First-
""6/18 McNeil first reported the companies organized under authority given him to raise a regt"
Does this order give the letter designations assigned to the companies or their commanders? If so could you provide?

I extrapolated this comment from the orders of Aug 15, to add to the June chronology of the regiment.

8/15 Special Orders #67 Army of the South West
Major R Hart ADC is hereby apptd Lt Col of McNeill’s regt Ark Infy to rank from 8/8
Capt. J Rogan is apptd Major of McNeill’s regt to rank from 8th inst [both later cdrs 30th Ark]
A J McNeill cdg McNeill’s regt of Ark inf is apptd Col of inf to date from 6/18 as the date first reported the companies organized under authority given him to raise a regt

Second-
"7/28 Special Orders #47 Army of the Southwest…following officers of McNeill’s regt apptd to duty as: Maj Baldwin to Lt Col etc"
Does this order give the complete list of officers? If so could you provide?

7/28 Special Orders #47 Army of the Southwest
II The following named officers are hereby appointed in Col A. J. McNeill’s regiment and will at once enter upon their respective duties, to wit:
Major G W Baldwin Lt Col
Adj C N Biscoe Capt Co E
F M Prewett Capt Co C
Jno A Trimble 1ST Lt Co L
All to take rank from this date

Hope this helps.
