I wonder about the source for this information....

Stop #4 Soldiers bid farewell at this Van Buren location.
At the time of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender, the 22nd and 34th Arkansas Regiments were camped in Marshall, Texas. The officers decided to march to Fort Smith and surrender. The once proud soldiers came across the river to Van Buren and assembled near this intersection. They bid each other final farewells and set out for their homes and the task of rebuilding their lives after the war.
