Re: HQ, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, Ark Militia

Bryan

Here is the timeline I have worked out. I am really trying to figure out why Rector sent the Militia home in March after Pea Ridge when he had just tricked the Legislature in to giving him the money to pay them. It is interesting that all those Spring 1862 Muster rolls that we have are from the 2nd and 3rd Brigades of Militia.

10 January, the District of the Trans-Mississippi is created from General Albert Sidney Johnston’s Department of the West and General Earl Van Dorn was placed in command.

January 29, Van Dorn arrives Little Rock. http://civilwardailygazette.com/2012/01/29/having-friends-in-richmond-pays-dividends-for-loring-van-dorn-arrives/ Issues a call for new regiments.

31 January, Rector calls for troops. Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dora, assigned in command of the Trans-Mississippi District, has made a requisition upon the authorities of Arkansas for ten regiments of infantry and four companies of artillery for service in the C. S. Army…100 companies of infantry and four of artillery be organized with dispatch, from those persons in the State who by law are subject to military duty, and by the 5th of March next report themselves for duty to General Van Dorn at Pocahontas, Ark….(The state was divided into four new divisions, All or either of which divisions failing to report the number of men respectively assigned to them by the said 5th of March will be subject to a draft, by counties, until their due proportion according to population is furnished to fill the requisition made upon the State by the general in command. In case it shall be necessary to make a draft from the militia to obtain the required nnmber for service, under this ordinance, or any other ordinance which has been or may hereafter be adopted, the military board heretofore created shall have the power to prescribe the manner and mode in which said draft shall be made.

17 February, General McCulloch issues a proclamation from Fayetteville “To Able-bodied Citizens Of Western Arkansas: The troops under General Price and myself are falling back before a superior force to the Boston Mountains. Thousands of Federal hirelings are within the line of your State, -whilst hundreds of men remain at home, notwithstanding their services are needed. Let every man turn out and form companies, and rally to meet the advancing enemy. Rally at once or it will be too late.

21 February, State Military Board, Ordered, That Col. C. Peyton call out the 13th Regiment of Arkansas Militia. (13th Militia Regiment belonged to the 2nd Militia Brigade)

21 February -17 March, 5th Militia Regiment, 3rd Militia Brigade, Crawford County, Musters
22 February -19 March, 7th Militia Regiment, 3rd Militia Brigade, Franklin County, Musters
20 February -19 March, 10th Militia Regiment, 3rd Militia Brigade, Johnson County, Musters
4 March -19 March, 51st Militia Regiment, 3rd Militia Brigade, Sebastian County, Musters
22 February -21 March, 58th Militia Regiment, 3rd Militia Brigade, Logan County, Musters
22 February -1 March, 62nd Militia Regiment, 3rd Militia Brigade, Johnson County, Musters

22 February Van Dorn received dispatches on February 22, that General Price had rapidly fallen back from Springfield before a superior force of the enemy, and was endeavoring to form a junction with the division of General McCulloch in Boston Mountains. http://www.civilwarhome.com/vandorn.htm

25 February, Brigadier General Burrow issues “To Arms! To Arms! Broadside from Fort Smith, “By Order of the Governor and Commander in Chief of the Militia and President of the State Military Board, All men subject to military duty ordered to report to the commanding officer of his company. 3rd Brigade includes:

17th Militia Regiment Scott County
5th Militia Regiment Crawford County
7th Militia Regiment Franklin County
10th Militia Regiment Johnson County
58th Militia Regiment Franklin County
51st Militia Regiment Sebastian County
62nd Militia Regiment Johnson County

26 February, State Military Board, Order issued to Brig. Gen. George M. Holt to organize and put in camp each regiment in his brigade without delay

2 March 1862, John J. Burrow, Headquarters, 3rd Brigade, First Division, Arkansas Militia, Van Buren, Arkansas, to Governor Henry M. Rector, fears that only about 1,400 out of 4,800 men enlisted in the regiment will report for duty, since many have gone into hiding or are joining the quartermaster department as teamsters and runners to escape combat.

3 March Van Dorn reaches the headquarters of Generals Price and McCulloch on March 3, http://www.civilwarhome.com/vandorn.htm

7-8 March, Battle of Pea Ridge,

7-9 March, 50th Militia Regiment, 2nd Militia Brigade, Johnson County, Musters
10-11 March, 15th Militia Regiment, 2nd Militia Brigade, Pope, Musters

13 March, H.W. Sholar, Greene County, Arkansas, to Governor Henry M. Rector, concerning Rector's recent call for 1,500 men to enlist in the militia. Companies are being raised in the county, but Sholar complains that the men who refuse to enlist are threatened with death and "mob law" reigns. Kie Oldham collection

17-22 March. Special Session of the Legislature, attempts to abolish Militia and Forbid Governor from Paying Militia Officers, but appropriates $575,000 to implement current military law. Governor pocket veto’s the bill abolishing the Militia and the Bill forbidding him to pay Militia Officers and uses the Appropriation to fund Militia activities. http://www.arkansasheritage.com/education-information/educators/pdfs/ah_earlyyears_civil_war.pdf

5 May, Rector’s Address: four thousand five hundred men be called as volunteers from the militia of the State, to be organized into companies, battalions and regiments, as directed by ordinances of the State Convention, to serve for twelve months in State service unless sooner discharged…..If the requisite number of men is not made up by volunteering by the 25th of May, the deficiency rill be detailed or drafted from the militia brigades or regiments having the fewest men in service. Troops raised under this call will not be transferred to confederate service under any circumstances without their consent, and on no account, unless a confederate force, sufficient to prevent invasion, is sent into the State. These are raised exclusively for home protection. Horses, horse equipments and arms lost by the casualties of war, will be paid for by the State.

6 June, By Order of General J. S. Roan, and Colonel A. H. Reynolds, 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Arkansas County Militia are ordered to assemble at their Regular Battalion Muster Grounds for the purpose of enrolling conscripts for service.
