“It sounds like the election occurred on April 30, 1862 while the regiment was at Fort Smith.”

As Danny mentioned, the year should be 1863. It is my understanding that the 26th was still in the Little Rock area in April 1863. It left Camp Anderson on 20 May 1863 and arrived at Camp Cabell near Fort Smith on 01 Jun 1863. No elections took place while the 26th garrisoned Fort Smith, although it was during this time that some got the idea that a re-organization should occur. Apparently Morgan had become dissatisfied to the point that he tendered his resignation on 19 Aug 1863, but Holmes did not accept it until weeks later. Word of Morgan’s dissatisfaction and subsequent resignation must have gotten around, however, as evidenced by attempts of many officers to curry favor with the men in hopes of advancing themselves via election. The regimental politics soon came to a stand still due to pressure from the Federals, which resulted in the evacuation of Fort Smith and the subsequent Battle of Devil’s Backbone. Morgan remained in command until December 1863 when the re-organization occurred at Camp Bragg.

This information came from the letters of Asa S. Morgan, Arkansas History Commission.
