To: Capt Loughborough, AAG
On the 28th of last May I was appointed adjutant of this Regt with the approval of the commanding Gen & by him I was ordered to duty. The appointment was duly forwarded to Richmond for approval of the President as I was at the time of this appointment orderly sergeant of Co B in this Regt.
On the 10th of this month a reorganization of the field officers of the Regt was ordered by Gen Maury-none of the old officers were re-elected and were therefore discharged and have gone home to Ark to enter the service there
My Col especially wanted me to join him in Ark if it would meet with the approval of the Gen commanding: I have a wife and three small children in Helena-they have no relatives there, and are in great distress
I would therefore respectfully ask that I may be transferred to service in Ark with permission to try and relieve my family from their distress before being ordered to duty, such time being allowed me as the
Gen may approve

Repository: Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, Central Arkansas Library System, 100 Rock Street, Little Rock, Arkansas 72201
Creator: Thompson, Samuel J., 1830-1863
Title: Samuel J. and Maggie Thompson Collection
Abstract: This collection consists of four letters written by Samuel J. Thompson while serving with the 23rd Arkansas Infantry, one Civil War letter by L. J. Smith from Tunnel Hill, Ga., and two additional letters.

10/12 near Holly Springs, Thompson [23rd Ark] gives a detailed description of that portion of the Battle of Corinth that happened at Davis' Bridge over the Hatchie River. He wants to correct a published report of the battle that says Moore’s bgde was captured at the bridge and re-taken by [Villepigue’s command which is entirely a mistake. He says that they have been marching and even sleeping in line of battle since Sept 7, but finally have an opportunity to rest.
Maury’s division, which is made up of Moore’s, [to which I belong] Cabell’s & Phifer’s bgdes which was marching in front on the retreat & Moore’s was in front of the division.
At present we are well furnished with rations & the men are permitted to …and recruit themselves as best as they can.
Write to me at Holly Springs. We have reorganized our regiment and turned Adams out and elected a man named Lyles. So you will direct them to S J Thompson
