I dug this older post from Bryan up out of the Archives. Any informaiton on the new Company H that is mention below would be appreciated.

Pat, there's no published regimental history of the 23rd Arkansas that I know of, but here's a brief sketch:

The 23rd Arkansas Infantry was organized at Memphis, Tennessee, on April 25, 1862, when Lieutenant-Colonel Charles W. Adams infantry battalion of five companies was reinforced by the addition of the two companies of Major Simon P. Hughes infantry battalion, and Captain Mitchell A. Adairs independent company. All companies were mustered for twelve months service. The regiment was reorganized for three years or the war at Camp Priceville, near Tupelo, Mississippi, on May 27, 1862, at which time Captain Thomas L. Westmorelands independent company was added, bringing the regiment up to full strength. The regiment reorganized again at Saltillo, Mississippi, on September 10, 1862, when the understrength 12th and 14th Arkansas Regiments were field-consolidated with the 23rd Arkansas Regiment.

The 23rd Arkansas was assigned to the Army of the West from April to September 1862, then to the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana from September 1862 to July 1863. The regiment was engaged in the battle of Corinth, as well as the siege of Port Hudson. When the garrison of Port Hudson capitulated on July 9, 1863, the men were paroled and exchanged in Arkansas. There the 23rd Arkansas was reorganized as a mounted infantry regiment and spent the rest of the war in the Trans-Mississippi Department. Their most significant action after Port Hudson was Prices Missouri Campaign in the Fall of 1864. The 23rd Arkansas surrendered at Wittsburg, Arkansas, on May 25, 1865.

The companies were from northeast Arkansas, except for the two companies (G & H) of Major Hughes battalion, as follows

Co. APoinsett County.
Co. BPhillips County.
Co. CSt. Francis County.
Co. DCrittenden County.
Co. EPhillips County.
Co. FMonroe County.
Co. GChicot County.
Co. HClark County.
Co. ICraighead County.
Co. KPoinsett County.

A new Company H, from Craighead County, was added after Port Hudson, to replace the Clark County company, which did not rejoin the regiment after being exchanged.
