Re: Govan's Brigade Captured at Jonesbor

found this in the archives.

So if parts of the 5th/13th and the 1st/15th escaped capture, that would make it appear that the 2nd/24th, 6th/7th and 8th/19th were pretty much entirely captured.

They were able to make a fighting retreat along with part of Granbury's Texans to reestablish the line, Cleburne shortly thereafter ordered a counterattack and in the charge the 1st and 15th lost their battleflag. The 5th and 13th would come out with the only battleflag from the brigade.

The prisoners were moved to Atlanta, but on northbound trains, moving up through Dalton, where there was an altercation with the USCT garrison. They were moved on to Chattanooga and held for a while at the city jail, soon they were sent on toward Nashville, when they got word of the exchange, able bodied man for able bodied man. They arrived back in GA in late September and the brigade was reestablished, the members who had not been captured had been assigned to Granbury's Brigade, arriving just as Hood began to make his move Northward into North Georgia. Some of the Brigade arrived after he had already moved out and had to catch up on the march, so the Brigade was used to guard the wagon train of the Army in the initial movement.
