Mentions of 2 dozen members of the AR 14th Inf.

Anyone doing research on the Arkansas 14th Infantry (Powers') will find some interesting information in John Madison Casey's letters. He talks about being a part of a cavalry unit made up of men of the 14th that pre-dated the 14th's formation, and how they were rejected by Price for not being properly armed or uniformed. Then he talks about his service in the 14th as a surgeon. The following soldiers are mentioned throughout his letters, all of whom were members of the 14th unless otherwise noted:

Private Joseph Madison Wolf (Co. I)
Captain Wythe Adams (Co. I)
Quarter Master Sgt. John H.B. Wolf (Co. I)
Private James Blair (Co. I)
Sgt. John Shipp (Co. I)
2nd Lt. Michael H. Wolf (Co. I)
Private W.B. Kennedy (Co. I)
Lt. Col. Pleasant Fowler (F&S)
Quartermaster Andrew J. Wolf (Co. I)
Captain John B. Wolf (Co. I)
Pvt. Jacob M. Wolf (not in regiment's rolls; discharged and substituted with his cousin, Joseph M. Wolf of the 1st AR Mounted Rifles, as noted in his service record with the 1st M.R)
Pvt. Thomas Painter (Co. I)
Captain Thomas Morton (Co. H of the 27th Infantry)
Chief Surgeon Charles Dean (Does not appear on muster rolls)
Private Asa Wolf (Co. H of the 27th Infantry--appears to have possibly been an early member of the 14th who does not appear on the regiment's rolls, as he is mentioned multiple times at the same time as other members of the unit)
Private Jacob H. Wolf (Co. I--does not appear on regimental rolls, but applies for and receives pension as a member of the 14th and the 1st Consolidated)
Private James C. Sweet (Co. I)
Richard Hutcheson (Does not appear in muster rolls, but is referenced as a member of the unit sick in the hospital. Dies in Nov 1862. Buried in Confederate Cemetery in Fayetteville)
Lt. William Simmons (Co. I)
Private A.F. [Allen] Woods (Co. I)
Col. William C. Mitchell (F&S)
Private John W. Hutcheson (Co. I)
Private Jacob W. Tinnin (Co. I)
James A. Wilson (Appears in Field and Staff rolls, but does not appear on CouchGenWeb roster for regiment)
1st Sgt. Thomas Martin (Co. I)

Casey himself does not appear in the regiment's regular rolls, but in their Field & Staff rolls; same goes for the aforementioned James A. Wilson.

Casey marries a daughter of Major Jacob Wolf of the famous "Wolf House", hence so many mentions of the Wolf's in the regiment.

A copy of the letters can be purchased in published form here: http://theltonhallbooks.com/aaa/Store/tabid/331/ProdID/197/The_Courting_Letters_of_John_Casey_to_Mollie_Wolf.aspx

Or scans of the originals can be found at the Mountain Home Library on a disc-set concerning the Wolf House.

I have a copy of an unpublished book that the Wolf House Committee was putting together for the letters shortly before their disbandment. If someone would like me to look up what is said about any of the above mentioned men, please let me know.
