Unfortunately, no heroes in my direct line who I can brag about. My g-g-grandfather was just one of thousands of ordinary infantry privates who usually showed up for work, and remained with the colors to the surrender.

But in addition to his first cousin John [mentioned above], another first cousin William was named to the Roll of Honor for heroism at Chickamauga while serving in the 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles. He was mortally wounded. Another first cousin Martin, also with the 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles, was wounded and captured at Murfreesboro. All the Howerton heroes were from that side of the family, not mine. My g-g-grandfather's brother was killed in action on Price's Missouri campaign.

Another g-g-grandfather, the only officer in my lineage, died a couple of years after the war when he was crushed to death in his sorghum press. An unheroic way to go after serving four years in the Confederate Army.
