Dear Melissa,

I am still in tolerable good health and am staying in camp all the time..Thare has nothing occured since our last fight that you have heard of worth attention..We have however since that time got some 15 or 20 fine mules from them..They send out no party now of less then 2 thousand men and several pieces of artillery..The prisoners we captured has all been paroled and I have today sent them to Helena with a flag of truce..General Holmes compliments me and my company very much..He says we have been of more service then nearly all the rest of the army.

Mr.Riddle is in good health and so is Lt.Carr. He will start on a scout in the morning.
I want you to write to me all about the wars and hanging in our country.....Etc........

Give my love to all our friends and to our children. And receive for yourself the LOVE of your Alfred Johnson.

Captain Johnson would be dead in three months..
