I have a question for those of you with more knowledge of the 17th and Port Hudson than I have. The 17th, or a portion of it, was captured at Port Hudson on 9 July 1863. Captain G.W. Van Hoose is listed in many places as being captured there as well but his record doesn't say it. There is a letter in there, though, to the provost marshal in Louisiana saying that he was being sent Van Hoose "for disposal" and that he had turned himself into Federal pickets on August 15. So, where was he at on July 9?
