Repatriation- who,what,when,how?

I read something awhile back about the North repatriating negroes back to africa. I think they even purchased land in africa for them. Does anyone know what this was about?

When did it occur (before or after civil war)? Was the south against it? If the south was against it is this one reason for the war?

If the South had went along with the North, and no civil war had occurred what would have been the outcome? Would have all the negroes been repatriated?

What happened to that program? Was it abandoned, why? Who owns that land now?

When negroes were freed did the government reimburse the slave owners money they spent to purchase the slaves?

I am trying to understand the war, and the mindset at the time of each side. To my understanding the North wanted to free the slaves, and repatriate them back to their native homeland of africa. But, the South wanted to keep slavery because the negroe is better able to work in the South's oppressive heat. But, if slavery would continue America would look more like an african country rather than a European country as the Founding Fathers had intended.

Does anyone know where I can get more information about that repatriation program?
