Mark, I don't know how Colonel Gratiot pronounced his name, but many, many moons ago when I was stationed in Washington DC, I worked with a guy named Gratiot. He pronounced it "GRA-SHOW", with the "A" pronounced as in "grass", and the "SHOW" pronounced as in "moving picture show", and the emphasis on the "GRA". He was from St. Louis, and said his ancestors came from France. I've always assumed that Colonel Gratiot pronounced it that way, but of course I have no way of knowing.
