That's how we figured out the pronunciation of Hindman, by the phonetic spelling that soldiers used in their letters. Also, as I recall, the pronunciation of Cabell.

For a real interesting case, consider Taliaferro. They're in my line about four generations back, and our family pronounces it Toliver.
