A Long and Fatal Shot.
A melancholy affair occurred in Hopefield, Arkansas, opposite this city, Saturday afternoon. A Mrs Hardy was seated, with a child in her arms, near the river bank, awaiting the return of the ferryboat on which she designed crossing over to this city. While quietly sitting there, three or four shots were fired from this side of the river, one of which struck her squarely on the chin, ranged downward, and severed the jugular vein. She fell backward and instantly expired. The babe was unhurt. The ball wag doubtless fired by some soldier who was trying his gun, unaware of the presence of any one in range on the opposite side, or that his charge would do execution at so great a distance.—Memphis Argus, 23d.
