Thanks Drew. This book stems from my interest in & research about my gr-grandfather's Civil War service in the 8th Missouri Vol. Cavalry. Simply put, I just wanted to know what he & his comrades experienced during the war. The book begins in April of 1864, partly because thats when my 17 year old ancestor joined the regiment at DeValls Bluff, but also because that month marked an upturn in activity (after a relatively quite 7 months after the fall of Little Rock ) that would keep them in the field for several months. Central to the book is Shelby's raid into the White River valley & the Union efforts against him. The destruction of gunboat #26 at Clarendon & the Union response is covered, as well as Shelby's attack on the railroad & the fighting at the hay stations. The book explores the fallout from Price's raid into Missouri & how Union higher command made decisions that affected the troopers in Arkansas, as well as how the supply situation in the state hampered these field operations. I hope that it will be beneficial to understanding the war in Arkansas a little better.
