Re: 51st Militia Regiment, Sebastain County

Militia Commissions were issued on 9 January 1860 to the following Officers of a Volunteer Company, The Fort Smith Rifles, in the 51st Regiment, Arkansas State Militia, of Sebastian County:

James H. Sparks, Captain
Joseph J. Walton 1LT
James A. Johnston, 2LT
Charles A. Birnie, Jr. 3LT

This looks like the company that was received and mustered in by authority of Genl McCullouch as an Emergency company to Garrison Ft Smith and to protect public property at the Post, and hence it was not mustered in any Regiment.’’ The period of duty was 15 Mar 1862-15 May 1862 at Ft Smith, AR.

FORT SMITH RIFLES.—This crack company of citizen soldiers paid our city a visit on Tuesday last, and went through a variety of military evolutions, showing that in drill and soldierly bearing, they were equal, if not superior, to older companies. Fort Smith may well be proud of her Rifle Company. We hope to again see Capt. Sparks and his company in our city.—Van Buren Press, Van Buren, Arkansas, Friday, January 11, 1861. http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/crawvol.html

does anyone know if the company entered regular Confederate Service after serving Garrison Duty?
