Thanks for your thoughts, Bruce. It makes sense that the battalion probably wasn't a regular Confederate outfit. I have no info on Prentice's unofficial organisation in the MSG - is this the same Clarence Prentice later of the 7th Confederate Cavalry Battalion? Also, would Hindman have authority to order MSG personnel about? Regardless, neither Provence's or Prentice's name seems to fit the original so I guess the mystery is still to be solved....
