Re: 3rd AR Infantry - Suggestions for reading

My GG grandfather was in Company "I".

Of course the one first read is Captain Calvin Colliers U.S. Air Force, "They'll Do To Tie To, Hood's Arkansas Toothpicks." First printed in Dec. 1959 and has had at least 3 printing since then. Of course much new information had been discovered since this book was first published and therefore it is somewhat dated.

You might what to consider Harold Simpson's Book "Hood's Texas Brigade, Lee's Grenadier Guard:" first published in 1970 and again in 1983. The probable is that Simpson book does not direct focus on the 3rd Arkansas as he more directly focuses on the Texas units of the brigade. The 3rd Arkansas did not become a part of the Texas Brigade until after September of 1862. So any Texas Brigade History will not cover the early service of the 3rd Arkansas.

Again both of these books are somewhat dated and somewhat hard to locate a copy of. For the Information that was available to Captain Collier in 1959 he did an excellant job on one of Arkansas premier fighting Units. But the computer and information revolution has unlocked many doors such as the Gerdes' web site, and an updated and revised regimental History of the 3rd Arkansas Infantry needs to be written.

Their bayonet charge for over a mile at Sharpsburg/Antietum, their stand unaided for ovr an hour at Manning's wall against 4 times their numbers in the Rose Woods at Gettysburg, Their fight in Vinard's Field at Chickamauga that cut them to pieces, and the Texas Brigade charge on the Second day of the Wilderness that stopped a Union attack and saved Lee's Army are the stuff that legends are made of. That last one to me is Unbelieveable, yet it took happened!!!

Each one of those fights alone deserve a small book written of their own.
