Re: "Cadet" in the Confederate Army

As found in Customs of the Service for Non-Commissioned Officers and Soldiers, United States Service, 1864, August V. Kautz, The Cadet, [USMA], Art. 555:

“They [Cadets] are allowed the same pay as the Naval Cadets, which is five hundred dollars per year.” This equates to $40+ per month.

Cadet Hopkins of the 43rd Tennessee Infantry, CSA received $40 per month, which was half that of a 2nd Lieutenant’s $80/month.

That ratio was continued for Cadets/Midshipmen of West Point and Annapolis who were allowed pay of half that of a 2nd Lieutenant/Ensign respectively, through at least the 1950’s.

Hopkins, James Elisha M., Lt., Co. C, 43rd Tennessee, born in North Carolina, resident of Greensboro, Guilford Co., N.C., admitted as Cadet to West Point September 1, 1860, age 20 years 2 months, with appointment from 5th N.C. district, Hon. John A. Gilmen, father, Solomon Hopkins [Farmer] listed as a resident of Nashville, Tenn., discharged February 9, 1861 “deficient in mathematics”, Col. Gillespie in an undated endorsement reports that “By order of Maj. Genl. G. B. Crittenden, Cadet J. W. W. Hopkins was regularly attached to my Regt. and has been discharging duty in (unreadable)”, pay voucher records receipt of $120 for the three months of March through May, 1862 indicating he was formally attached to the brigade on or about March 1, 1862.
