The Civil War comes home. Over 400 unknown Confederate soldiers are buried in Fairview Cemetery. From Prairie Grove soldiers retreated to Van Buren. The Battle of Pea Ridge was fought in Arkansas on March 7-8, 1862.

Killed in the Battle of Oak Hill, Missouri, August 10th. Captain Thomas Brown of Van Buren, Arkansas. He fell "while gallantly fighting at the head of his company". On that bloody battle field he proved himself
worthy of his native state. Front Guard Grandiots 3 Ark. Inf. CSA. He was the Captain of the Van Buren Frontier Guards, summoned to battle at Wilson's Creek Missouri in 1861, and killed on the first day of battle.

Served with Green's Company, Thompson's Regiment, Missouri State Guard, CSA. George Davis had been a Private in "Company A, Shelby's Regiment." He had Participated in the Battle of Pea Ridge, where he was wounded and died at Peach Orchard Gap, Arkansas. Peach Orchard Gap was the original name for the Town of El Paso, Arkansas (located in White County) and the 4th Missouri Infantry was involved in the Battle of Pea Ridge (also known as the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern).
The captain of Company F, 4th Missouri Volunteer Infantry Regiment from March - November 1862 (during the time Davis was in that unit) was Henderson P. Green. This was one of the companies that comprised the regiment commanded by Colonel Gideon W. Thompson and this regiment had been attached to General Joseph O. Shelby's Brigade.
