The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Johnson County Veterans

I am completing a book (primarily a roster) of Johnson County men in the Civil War, but also including those born in Johnson County who served elsewhere, as well as veterans who moved to Johnson County after the war.

A typical entry for the roster portion of the book is as follows:

MCCONNELL, WILLIAM HENRY: C. S. Company C, 16th Arkansas Infantry Regiment Pvt/2Lt. Enlisted 26 Oct 1861 at Fayetteville. Age at enlistment: 25. Captured 9 Mar 1862 on march from Pea Ridge. Escaped Mar 1862. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant 28 Jun 1862. Listed as Senior 2nd Lieutenant when captured as Port Hudson, Louisiana 9 Jul 1863. Sent north on steamer Planet to Johnson’s Island 16 Jul 1863, but escaped overboard near Napoleon, Arkansas. Company L, 7th Arkansas Cavalry Regiment. Enlisted after Feb 1864. Born 12 Feb 1836 in Muhlenburg Co., Kentucky. Married Lenora Faronette King 2 Dec 1856 in Johnson County. Age listed as 24 on 1860 Johnson County Census. Present at 1892 U.C.V. meeting in Clarksville. Photograph on U.C.V. memorial in Johnson County courtroom. Filed Pension Application (#23770) 14 Aug 1915 from Johnson County. Died 24 May 1917 at Clarksville, Johnson County. Buried in Oakland Memorial Cemetery, Clarksville, Johnson, Arkansas. Brother of Edward T., Hall S., and John B. McConnell.

I currently have over 2,200 individuals. The largest enlistments, in Arkansas organizations, for Johnson County men were in the following units:
1st Mounted Rifles, Company C
4th (Gordon's) Cavalry Regiment, Company C (partial) and Company D
7th Cavalry Regiment, Companies B, E, L, and M
10th Militia
16th Infantry, Companies A, B, and C
17th (Lemoyne's) Infantry, Company C
26th Infantry, Company H
35th Infantry, Company C
62nd Militia
4th Cavalry (Union), Companies A, B
1st Infantry (Union), Company H
2nd Infantry (Union), Companies B, E, H, I, and K
4th Infantry (Union), Company A

There are hundreds of soldiers from other Arkansas regiments and every Confederate state except Florida and Maryland, and every Union state except, New Hampshire, Maryland, New Jersey and Delaware.

Any suggestions, comments, assistance is welcome.
