I have a file on the early days of Matlock's regiment that was prepared primarily from The Peter Wellington Alexander Papers.

Here is an entry leading up to the June 27/28 reference to a skirmish. My notes indicated that the film was difficult to read for this particular entry.

June 26, 1862 Matlock to General Hindman-I am this far on my route with my main force. The enemy are encamped at the Waddell farm one mile beyond Village Creek. They are sending out an advance of about 5 or 600 men daily on this side of the Creek. I expect to meet them tomorrow. My force amounts after subtracting the sick is 350. I find more of my men sick than I expected and more unarmed. It is impossible for me to do much obstruction of Village Creek as they are camped in 1 mile of it and have a large force daily for ____damage_________________-
… two days past on this side than I have. I also [learn?] from my scouts that they can cross it almost anywhere. I will obstruct it in obedience to orders anyhow whenever I can though my main obstruction will be from _______. [Advise?] McDonald _____ cross Tupelo and on Cache River as well as all along the roads between those points-I will do all I can and fight them every time I see them. I have a number of negroes at work day and night. I will obstruct Tupelo bottom.

June 28, 1862 Hick’s Company with five other Companies of the Regiment under command of Captain Hicks attacked the enemy in force and in position on White River near Grand Glaize. The battle commenced near night and was continued till the last of the enemy’s guns could be distinctly seen in the darkness. The enemy’s loss 90 killed & wounded. Confederate loss 1 killed & 4 wounded. The enemy was driven from the field.
