Head Quarters Fort Smith [Arkansas] July 27th 1862 General [Thomas C. Hindman] Captain [John G.] Reid [Reid's Arkansas State Battery] with the four guns arrived today he says it will take him two weeks to have the battery in good condition It is useless to state what it will require as of course you know – I directed he would have two guns fixed and after they were finished his others. Col Harosse reported in person tonight having left his command some (20) twenty miles back when grass and forage Can be had – I will Keep him at that point untill his horses can be shod and his men Armed – he has only four hundred men for duty, instead of seven hundred and has a regimental organization, with a Considerable number of men not armed—Maj [Samuel] Gibsons command is mustered into the Service atlast he reports five Companies total Strength three hundred and seventy five men with not more than one hundred and seventy guns. [Frank A. Rector] Rectors regiment [1st Arkansas Infantry] not yet armed I have exerted myself to the utmost and thought I could have effected more but so it is. I sent you a Copy of my letter to Col [Douglas H.] Cooper. I now Send you his letter
