I have been reading Jeffery R. Price's book, Courage and Desperation Rarely Equaled: The 36th Arkansas Infantry Regiment (CSA), 26 June 1862--25 May 1865 which is a regimental history of the 36th Arkansas. I think several of us has obtained copies of this book which I think was originally a paper written for an Army Officer Education program, possibly the Army War College.

Price is able to provide a great deal of late war information on the Strength, Losses, and movements of the 36th that seems to go far beyond what we have on most of the other Trans-Mississippi units after the Camden Campaign. Most folks on this board refer to the period of time after March 1864 as a black hole, where most of the muster rolls from the Trans-Mississippi seem to have been lost.

Price's work includes the strength of the regiment on April 14, 1865 as 598 when it arrived at Marshall, Texas, and 587 on 26 May 1865 when the regiment surrendered.

I have not seen this information on other Trans-Mississippi regiment for this time period. Is the 36th unique in that records exist for that regiment that do not exist in the others from this region and time, or has Price found a new source for information? He references the Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers who served in Organizations from the State of Arkansas , 36th Infantry. Microfilm Series #317, Roll 226-229. I haven't found the actual microfilm, but on Fold3, I don't appear to find any more records than exist form the other Trans-Mississippi Units.
