As to the late war strength of the 36th Arkansas, here are some pertinent entries from the digitized Confederate War Records RG 109 from the National Archives. I could piece together specific citations for those that do not include such, but only if considered necessary.

You will note the reference to consolidation of the Regiment, additional recruits [most likely Arkansas Cavalry dismounted after Price's Missouri raid], exchanged prisoners, etc.

I am not disputing the strength numbers presented above, but you will note that Churchill's entire division of Arkansas Infy had only 2,186 privates effective for duty on Oct 18, 1864.

10/18/64 Magruder’s staff to Major Rowley, chief engineer-In reply to your communication of this date, I furnish the following information as requested:
Forney's division Infy, 2,672;
Polignac's division Infy, 1,132;
Parson's division Infy, 922;
Churchill's division Infy 2,186
The above show the troops, number eff privates, present for duty.

1/15/65 Hqs Dist of Ark, Washington to Churchill cdg division-The major-general cdg directs that you distribute the recruits of your command at once to the different Co’s. You will arm them & make them ready with ammunition & equipments, as far as you can, for the field at once. Hold three Bgdes in readiness to march at a moment's warning to Dooley's Ferry & Fulton, each bringing all their axes, spades, &c., for working upon fortifications.

1/26/65 Hqs Churchill’s Div, Camp Lee to Col R G Shaver, Camden: I am instructed by Gen Churchill to direct that you, assuming command of Davie’s Regt, as well as your own, will move your command without delay to Minden, there to report to these Hqs. These instructions are based on paragraphs XII & XIII, S O No 25

2/21/65 Camp Magruder, Div Hqs to Col Shaver, Camden-Dist Hqs orders directs Gen Parsons to order yours & Davies’ Regts to rejoin their respective Bgdes. You will take command of both as in the instructions of 1/26 & march to this camp.

3/19/65 Hqs Churchill’s Div, Shreveport-Gen McNair cdg Div to Col Davies [36th Ark] at Minden-take command of yours, Gaither’s [27th] & Shaver’s Regt [38th]& march here or wherever the Div may be. On arrival, the Regts will return to their Bgdes

They will be exchanged today

4/3/65 Dept of TM Hqs, Shreveport to Gen Churchill-the Ark prisoners at the parole camp have been ordered to you. Return those belonging to your command to duty at once. & forward an application for the transfer to your command of those belonging to Cav commands. They have been exchanged today

4/5 Hqs Churchill’s Div, Shreveport to Bgde Cdrs this Div-Forward to this office an application for the transfer to your commands of the exchanged prisoners who belong to Cav commands sent to your Bgdes today giving the Co & Regt to which they desire to be attached

4/6/65 Shreveport Hqs to Lt Col Hathaway, 36th Ark-Regarding your request to consolidate Buster’s Bn with your Regt that until the act of Congress for such measures is rec’d no action can be taken.

5/8/65 Magruder to Boggs-Col R G Shaver on account of dismemberment of his Regt wishes to report to me. I have a very important command for him. Please order him to me.
