Re: Railroad near Winchester, Desha Co

The name of the railroad was the Mississippi Ouachita & Red River Railroad, it was incorporated 1852. Its first route was planned to run from the Mississippi River from a choice of several places to Dooley's Ferry on the Red River. I believe the railroad changed hands and new route was planned in the mid 1850's. The new route was to start at Gaines Landing on the Mississippi River and pass through Camden on its way to Fulton on Red River. Not much work was ever completed from the 1850's through start of the Civil War, just some earth work on the railroad embankments in different places. During the War some Confederate troops write about camping next to a railroad embankment at Tulip, Arkansas. The railroad lay dormant until about 1875 when some serious work began, but it was plagued with problems and after a buyout, name change and a merger, it became a part of a major railroad system passing through Little Rock to Texarkana and on to Dallas.
