In Response To: Cook's Battalion ()

Well have not been able to determine who A. V. Cook is but the Captain Crawford is Capt Augustus (Gus) Crawford of Saline Co. He had previously served as Capt of Co D 11th Ark and then Co D 11 and 17th Ark Mounted Inf. By 1864 he was back in Ark serving....now most likely it was with Poe and Logan in 11th Ark Cav but he does not show up on any rosters. I have a receipt for corn in Saline Co given to a civilian signed by A. A. Crawford, Capt which is him. My great Grandfather also stated on pension application that he served in Gus Crawford's Company. The Encyclopedia of Ark article on that battle incorrectly states it is William A. Crawford but they are speculating...he was a Colonel and everyone knew that at the time. The OR does not list Crawford by name or initials so that was just speculation by author. It is possible if Cook had a battalion, Crawford's company could have been in it as well. Looks like Cook hung out in Hot Spring Co, right next to Crawford's Saline Co. Perhaps they operated there during 1864 since they knew it well. Would be interested to know more if you find it.
