Dick Urbaniak-Color bearer at Murfreesboro

Dick,

I replied to your previous post with add'l info but I think I have it figured out...

In the OR report of Captain William Cotter, the acting commander of the 30th (25th), he stated the color bearer was "cut down" in the first assault when they took the first artillery battery which is also where 7 of the company commanders also fell. Later in his report he talks of having to charge another enemy battery and specifically mentions the color bearer losing his hand and abandoning his colors. They were under heavy canister and cannon fire so makes sense, him losing his hand. Again, the only soldier on the original casualty roll who was wounded severely in the hand was Cpl E. G. Edwards...so with that said, I feel Ensign H. J. Carlile was cut down in the first engagement that morning and then that afternoon, Cpl Edwards probably lost his hand and the flag that is now at the Old State House museum.
