6/8/62 Newton to Col A Johnson cdg E Ark-Hindman directs me to say that you will let the men raised by you under the authority given you today, fully to understand that they are to be dismtd whenever it is found expedient.
He also directs that you burn all cotton between White & Ms Rivers, removing enough to distribute to each necessitous person ten pounds for manufacturing clothing, and a sufficient quantity to each planter for clothing for his family and Negroes.
All Confederate and State officers are directed and all good citizens requested to render you all necessary assistance, and you will arrest and send here for trail as a traitor any person who may resist the execution of this order

Capt. J. D. Pritchard is assigned duty as Quarter Master of Col. Burleson’s Regt now being organized under orders from these Head Quarters, and will report to him for duty at once.
II. Lt L. C. Gause is assigned duty as Adjt. Of Co. Burleson’s Regt, now being organized under orders from these Head Quarters, and will report to him for duty at once.
III. Capt D. H. Ringo will proceed at once to the Counties of Perry, Yell, Scott, Hot Springs and Saline where he is authorized to raise one or more companies of Infy not to exceed then for the Confederate service for the war. He is authorized to procure all arms and ammunition by impressments, if necessary, the above named counties are and will send surplus to this place and be turned over to the Ordnance officer. He will make report to these HQs of each Co as it is organized.

They are to conscript roving and unattached co’s wherever raised

6/15 Newton to Col Albert Johnson, Trenton, Phillips County-Your dispatch by courier was received today.
The order assigning Maj. Polk to you was made upon the information that you wished it. As far as practicable, the preferences of officers raising troops will be consulted in such matters. Your action requiring the conscripts to rendezvous at Trenton is approved. Use your discretion in similar cases.
To expedite our operations against the enemy, are order has been made, dividing the country east of White River with three districts, a copy of which is enclosed. It’s believed taking the State records as the cases of the calculation, that each district contains persons within the ages of conscription sufficient to form a Regt.
You are hereby authorized to retain command of Capt. Anderson’s Co as part of the Regt you are raising.

6/16 Hindman to Col Albert Johnson Trenton, Phillips Co-your actions are approved to rendezvous the conscripts at Trenton-Ok for you to keep Capt Anderson’s Co for the Regt you are raising
The country East of White River has been divided into 3 districts, copy of the order attached. State records indicate enough in each district to form a Regt in each

The conscripts brought from Phillips county by A C Robertson and now attached to Col A W Johnson will constitute a Co under John Horner as Capt

6/25 Special Orders #15 Army of the South West
III Major C S Mitchell is authorized and empowered to organize into one or more Co’s of mounted Infy of such Missourians as may be east of White River not heretofore incorporated into co’s under any officers acting under orders from here
He will report to Col A W Johnson

6/26 Hindman to Johnson-I telegraphed you that I desired the conscripts who were enrolled by Col. A. C. Robertson, some sixty (60) or Seventy (70) in number to be formed into one Co under command of Jon J. Horner as Capt, Robert T. Shell as 1st Lt, the two 2nd Lt’s to be elected by the men.
Lt Shell has reported here in person, and had not heard of the telegraph to you on the subject. I therefore send him to you with this letter, and wish that he shall organize and take command of the Co, until such time as Capt Horner and those with him at DeVall’s Bluff can be spared from their present duty. The Co will of course be of your command.
Exemptions granted to persons enrolled by Col Robertson are annulled. A Confederate Surgeon will be sent you speedily, for that duty.

7/4 Waldon-Tomlinson’s Co org & marched to Ft Smith

7/17 Special Orders #36 Army of the South West-Capt. Rufus Anderson of Col Johnson’s Regt now east of White river will report to Col Johnson at this place without delay

7/19 Special Orders #38 Army of the South West-The Co’s commanded by Capt Ringo will be of Col Johnson’s Regt and Ringo to report to Col Johnson-He is apptd Lt Col of Johnson Regt

7/20 Ft Smith [or Big Creek, Sebastian Co] - Tomlinson’s Co mustered into service

8/12 Newton to Lt G W White-You will move your Co by the nearest practicable route, to camp Crystal Hill, and report to Col A. Johnson or the cdg officer of his Regt, for duty.

8/15 Special Orders 67 Army of the South West-A W Johnson is appointed Col of the Ark Regt now commanded by him to take rank from 6/8.

8/16 Special Orders #68 Army of the South West-Lt Col Ringo’s resignation accepted [although appears he did not resign until 11/2]

8/29 Hailey’s Co served as cavalry until dismtd 8/29

9/3 Co G org on King’s River thence marched to Elm Springs

9/12 Elm Springs-Co G mustered into service as Ark Infy

9/16 Perkins Co & Tomlinson’s Co served as cavalry until dismtd 9/16 by order of Col Carroll

10/27 S O #24/II- Col. A. W. Johnson, having tendered his resignation the same is hereby accepted & Col. Johnson is permitted to report to Genl. J. C. Breckenridge, East of the Ms River, all guards and pickets will pass Col. Johnson accordingly.

11/2 on Van Buren & Clarksville Road-S O #29
I. Lt Col Daniel H. Ringo, of Johnson’s Regt, Ark Vols, having tendered his resignation which is forwarded with the approval of the Maj Gen Cdg endorsed upon it, leave is granted Lt. Col Ringo, to go east of the Ms River

11/2 Hindman accepts resignations of Col A W Johnson & Lt Col D W Ringo submitted at camp on Mulberry. Not in good standing w/the other officers

11/3 Camp on Mulberry, S O #30
Upon the recommendation of the Co officers of Johnson’s Regt of Ark Infy, the following persons and assigned to duty as the Field Officers of that Regt, subject to confirmation by the War Dept:
A. T. Hawthorne, to be Col, in the place of Col Johnson, resigned.
Maj. C. Polk to be Lt Col in the place of Lt Col Ringo, resigned.
Lt. J. B. Clarke to be Major in the place of Maj. C. Polk, promoted to Lt Col
All to make rank from this date. The Regt will hereafter be known as “Hawthorne’s Regt of Ark Infy.”
VI. Col A. T. Hawthorne is relieved of the command of “Hawthorne’s Bn,” Col. Brooks Brigade, and will report here for duty and [command of] his Regt.

11/3 Newton to Brooks, cdg unarmed Bgde- I enclose a copy of the orders assigning Col Hawthorne to the command of the regiment lately commanded by Col. A. W. Johnson and ordering him here.
Gen Hindman desires you to assign the senior Capt to the command of the Bn now commanded by Col. Hawthorne, and move them up here when armed. You will notify the captain commanding that the Bn will be consolidate with Buster’s Bn, and a regiment formed of the two, the field officers of which will be appointed hereafter.

11/4 date of commission for A Hawthorne as Col-11/3 date of rank

12/16 Hawthorne’s Regt reorg by consol of original Co’s & addition of dismtd Co’s of Hailey’s, Perkins, Tomlinson
Six of the Co’s were consolidated, others were redesignated, and new Co’s were added from Gipson's Bn, which had been dismtd and disbanded. The original Co E was from Monroe County. It was consolidated with original Co L (from Greene County) and reorganized as (new) Co E.
Co’s I and K were still part of Gipson's Bn Ark Mtd Rifles (Dismtd) in the battle- They joined the Regt at the reorganization

12/16 Gipson's Bn was disbanded, and at least three companies were assigned to the reorganized Regt -- Hailey's and Perkins' Companies were consolidated to form (new) Co. H and Tumlinson's as (new) Co. K.

12/7 this Co fought at Prairie Grove-as did Tomlinson’s Co
Were Serving in Carroll’s NW Dist in units that dissolved & merged into Hawthorne’s Regt

8/29 Hailey’s Co served as cavalry until dismtd 8/29

9/3 Co G org on King’s River thence marched to Elm Springs

9/12 Elm Springs-Co G mustered into service 9/12 as Ark Infy

9/16 Perkins Co & Tomlinson’s Co served as cavalry until dismtd 9/16 by order of Col Carroll

10/6 Little Rock- R M Chew-pd for expenses for cdg flag of truce party to Memphis dispatched by Hindman’s order-expenses incurred 9/26-10/4 [this would be prior to cdg Hawthorne’s/Chew’s Bn]

"Record of Events" remarks from (new) Co. H & (new) Co. K, 39th Ark Infy-These were Perkins'/Hailey's consolidated Co and Tumlinson's Co, respectively.
Co H This Co is composed of two Co’s---one formerly commanded by Capt Perkins, the other by Capt Hailey-and consolidated into one by order of Hindman. They were originally mustered into service as Cavalry and served as such as follows---Hailey’s Co 8/24 & Perkins’ Co. to

9/16, and are paid as such on this roll. This Co was in the battle of Prairie Grove & had 10 men killed and wounded.
Co K This Co was organized on 7/4 in Waldron, Scott County & marched thence to Big Creek, Sebastian County, to Fort Smith and mustered into service on 7/20 as a Cavalry Co and served as such until 9/16 when it was dismounted by order of Col Carroll. Served as such one month & twenty seven days when it was dismounted by order of Col Carroll.
Was in the battle of Prairie Grove
