Preservation Effort

I am passing this along from an email I got at the office.

Our group, the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association,is trying to save the site of Camp Letterman General Hospital in Gettysburg from development.Over 4,000 badly wounded Union and Confederate soldiers from the battle were treated at that hospital and 365 soldiers died of their wounds in the 4 months Letterman was in operation. One of the soldiers who died at Camp Letterman was from Arkansas,Stephen A. Wallace of the 3rd Arkansas. We are trying to get S&A Homes to save 17 acres out of 191 acres they own that contained tents with the wounded at Letterman.Four articles about our efforts to save the site have come out from,"Maine at War" Gettysburg College Hillsdale College and Civil War Times magazine.the easiest way to get to them is go to GOOGLE,type in,"Help Save 17 Acres of Camp Letterman".They are under the subtitles,"maineatwar" "gettysburgcompiler' "hillsdalecollegian" and "historynet.com".We are asking people to write to S&A Homes to ask them to work with our group to save those 17 acres.Recently we have had the following send letters to S&A;James McPherson,Harold Holzer,CWRT of Nebraska,Nashville CWRT,San Francisco CWRT,Pasadena CWRT,Bull Run CWRT,Las Vegas CWRT,Oklahoma City CWRT,Knoxville CWRT,Cedar Valley CWRT-Iowa,CWRT of Greater Kingston,Ontario-Canada,Atlanta CWRT,Baltimore CWRT,Jersey Shore CWRT,George Tyler Moore Center for Civil War Studies-Shepherd College-Wv.,Association of the United States Army,Historian-New Jersey National Guard Museum,Council on America's Military Past,North Carolina Military Historians Society,Director-John Heinz History Center-Pa.,Sons of Confederate Veterans-South Carolina Division,Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States,Military Order of the Stars and Bars,Society of Women and the Civil War,NW Christian Commission Living Historians-Minn.,12th Virginia Living Historians,140th New York Living Historians,105th Pennsylvania Living Historians,6th Texas Living Historians,3rd Maine Living Historians.Bob Poole, owner of S&A Homes has requested a conference call with our president and myself to see if we can find a resolution to the Camp Letterman situation. His secretary acknowledged that they have received letters about Camp Letterman. If you could,it would be a great help to our efforts to save the site if your organization could please send even a brief note to S&A Homes just asking them to work with our group to save those 17 acres.Their address is; S&A Homes Bob Poole,CEO Suite 200 2121 Old Gatesburg Road State College,Pa. 16803.If you have any questions, please contact me.Thank You.
