Surrendered:
Garland’s Bgde=1796 with probably 350-400 others escaping
10th Tex=715 with about 90 escaping capture or in the hospital
15th Tex=478 with 90 others escaping
17th Tex=390 with 200 escaping in the swamps
Deshler Bgde=2116 captured & 630 escaped

4791 total captured-Gen Sherman reported that 4,791 prisoners, many from the 4th Bgde of the Texas Div, had been captured.

For the surviving prisoners captivity at Camp Douglas & Camp Butler proved as deadly as a continued battle for Ark Post might have been. At Camp Butler 306 Texas prisoners died of disease, at Camp Douglas 388 prisoners died of various causes. Despite these numbers the percentage of soldiers taking the oath of allegiance remained remarkably low. After a brutal winter, the survivors were exchanged in Va & served as an emergency defense force for Richmond during the Chancellorsville Campaign. They were later transferred back west were they were consolidated & took part in the Tenn campaigns. http://www.brettschulte.net/CWBlog/2013/08/14/Ark-post-part-9/

Adding up the individual numbers captured from above yields 5495 as compared to 4791

Subtracting 691 deaths in prison yields 4100 available after prison [or 4804 using the individual numbers above] more than enough for 2 large Texas Bgdes
------------------------------------------------

Attack on Ark Post netted the Union forces 5,500 Confederate prisoners.
------------------------------------------------------------
By the time their captivity ended, of the 633 men taken prisoners, 185 had died, & 24 had taken the oath. Another 58 died shortly after release of diseases contracted during captivity. This left only 306 men who survived & were returned to service.
