Doyle-the reports come from different sources. Garland's report [except for the numbers escaping] comes from: Report of Col Robert R. Garland, 6th Texas Infy, with application for Court of Inquiry
War of the Rebellion: Serial 024 Pp. 0783-86 WEST TENN. & NORTHERN MISS Ch XXIX
I think Garland's official report has all appearances of being authentic.

The numbers for Garland's escapees, and the numerical report for Desler's Brigade are taken from:
Granbury's Texas Brigade: Diehard Western Confederates
By John R. Lundberg
https://books.google.com/books?id=6FcIcZ2UyvMC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false

On further review, Lundberg's figures appear to be suspect. For instance, he shows the number captured as greater than the aggregate present on the night before the battle. He also shows the escapees as an additional number on top of that. Way too many men for Confederate units in the Trans Mississippi.

As we know, reports on numbers for Confederate units have often been somewhat less than reliable.
