Excerpt from They Never Came Back By Capt. John W. Lavender: (Lavender was captain of Co. F, 4th Arkansas Infantry)

"Our Regiment was Put on a Steamboat called the Melton Brown and shiped to Memphis, Tenn. We arrived at Memphis without any Insident of note Except the River water had bad effect on the men and owing to being crowded on the Boat about like Sardines in a box caused considerable and merriment Especially at Knight when Every Foot of Floor space was occupied by men sleeping and no Pass way left open and one walking Back would usually tread on some one nearly Every step and you may imagin the Balance. Generallyhad considerable cleaning up at Morning. At Memphis we was put on cars and Sent to Corinth Miss where we was put in Johnsons Army."
