Columbus died on Jan. 22, 1865 of diarrhea and chronic encephalitis in the hospital at DuValls Bluff. He was originally buried at DuValls Bluff, but was reinterred in 1868 to the National Cemetery in Little Rock. His grave location is in Section 10 grave #5047. He received a replacement military headstone on May 20, 1942. No reason was given for replacing the original headstone in 1942, but it must have gotten damaged. The request for the new stone was made on April 7, 1942. The new stone was shipped from Vermont. I believe the Veteran's headstones still come from the same Vermont quarry today.
