Re: How did the cavalry fight in Arkansas?

The Union cavalry patrolled quite extensively in central Arkansas in 1864-65, and there were many short actions and ambushes that took place mounted. One of the better cavalry actions was Shelby's raid on the hay stations in August of 1864. During the attack on Ashley's I think he dismounted his troops and they fought as infantry. As they advanced to the next several stations they may have remained mounted. One of his soldiers described jumping his horse over the hay and log breastworks of a station right into the middle of the Union defenders. The force that Shelby sent to block any Union rescue forces from DeValls Bluff fought with Colonel Geiger's cavalry brigade near Jones Station (Long Prairie they called it) and both sides fought mounted, within 40 or 50 yards of one another.
