William Henry Shannon

Looking for info on William Henry Shannon, Mar. 19, 1835 - Jan 26, 1878. In particular, I'm trying to find if Shannon had any service prior to July 1862.

On 1850 census, at age 15, he is in Washington County, Vineyard Township with parents Isaac and Jemimah. On 1860 census, William is a school teacher in Crawford County, Jasper Township with wife Sarah Evaline Drake.

Enlisted July 4, 1862 at Evansville by Joel Mayes Bryan (by authority of Albert Pike) in Bryan's first company in which Shannon may have been 1st Lieutenant. In Sept 1862 the 1st Battalion Cherokee Partisan Rangers (Bryan's Battalion) is organized (by order of Hindman) with Bryan promoted to major and Shannon becomes captain, Company A. In Feb 1863, Bryan's Battalion is combined with 'excess' companies in Watie's 1st Cherokee Mtd Vols (by order of D.H. Cooper) to form the 2nd Cherokee Mtd Vols (Adair's Regt) -- Bryan's Co. A becomes Co. H with Shannon still captain.
