One of the books in my personal library (sorry, I don't have it at hand to give a citation) states that the Alabama Voluteer Corps was armed with mostly .69 caliber M1842's. If this is so, then those would have made up the majority of what was in the arsenals of the State of Alabama at the beginning of the war (those 18,000 that the governor referenced).
