Re: Short Cavalry Enfield Rifles?
In Response To: Short Cavalry Enfield Rifles? ()

Chris,

The Confederates did import, in limited quanties, some Pattern 1856 Cavalry Carbines (and perhaps some P 1861 Cavalry Carbines as well). These were two-banded carbines.

The CS also imported some Pattern 1853 Artillery Musketoons, again in limited quantities. And the Confederates imported thousands of Pattern 1856 and Pattern 1858 Sergeants Rifles, as well as some P 1860 and P 1861 Volunteer Rifles.

All of the above were two-banded Enfields. But quantities of all of the above Enfield pattern arms were dwarfed by the hundreds of thousands of Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle muskets imported by the Confederacy.

The sketch you site is probably referring to the P 1856 Cavalry Carbines, but it is impossible to know for sure without further information. Surviving Confederate regimental ordnance reports are quite rare. So it is unlikely that one can be found for this regiment, but not impossible.

Hope this helps.
