civil war bayonets

I have a civil war bayonet (sabre bayonet) that has an inscription along the top of the blade. I cannot quiet make out the rank or name, only part of the date at the end. It appears to be January -- 1868.
My question is: is there anyway that anyone is aware of, that the inscription can be lifted? I would love to be able to return this piece to the family of this ancestor. If someone gave it to me from one of my confederate ancestors I would be ecstatic. It is in excellent condition except for the inscription. I can almost read it, but not quiet. I'm sure there must be some technical way to make it readable. Thanks for any help...........Mike Dale
