Bob,

Battle Shirts?

The shirts that soldiers wore were one of the few articles of clothing was not standardized by both Governments. Although both Governments issued shirts to their soldiers when required, soldiers often supplied their own. You can find examples of these shirts in the two Time-Life Books, "Arms and Equipment of the Confederacy: Echoes of Glory" and "Arms and Equipment of the Union: Echoes of Glory". You can also find examples in many of the museums and some museums have examples you can view online. Try the Museum of the Confederacy, www.moc.org; the National Civil War Museum, www.nationalcivilwarmuseum.org; and the Civil War Soldier's Museum, www.cwmuseum.org.

I hope this helps.

Respectfully,
