The NJ simply indicates New Jersey ownership and use - it has no relationship to any arsenal. On this saber it would most likely indicate use by a New Jersey cavalry unit.

During the Civil War many states purchased items directly and marked them, or marked items issued to their militia or state units from the Federal government. The most commonly found state markings in my experience have been NJ, Mass (or MS), and OHIO.
